President William Ruto has unveiled a bold plan to tackle youth unemployment by promoting entrepreneurship through the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.

During the official launch of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) project at State House Nairobi on October 1, Ruto directed Principal Secretaries to prepare for the nationwide rollout of this multi-billion shilling initiative. The goal: to create grassroots opportunities for young people across all 1,450 wards in Kenya.

“We’re investing in our youth by expanding access to jobs and business opportunities,” Ruto said. “Through our partnership with the World Bank, we’re rolling out the Ksh5 billion NYOTA Project to support 100,000 young Kenyans.”

Each selected youth will receive a Ksh50,000 grant to launch or grow their business idea. With 70 beneficiaries per ward, the program aims to spark innovation and self-employment across the country.

The launch event also brought together key government officials, including Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and representatives from the MSME, Sports, and Youth ministries, signaling a unified government approach to youth empowerment.
