Kenya is in mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in Kochi, India, at the age of 80. According to reports, Odinga suffered a cardiac arrest during a morning walk and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
President William Ruto addressed the nation in a somber statement, declaring seven days of national mourning in honour of Odinga’s contributions to the country. The President described Odinga as “Kenya’s foremost statesman and one of Africa’s greatest sons,” acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s democratic landscape.
Odinga was a central figure in Kenyan politics, known for his advocacy for multiparty democracy and his role in the 2007–2008 post-election crisis, which led to the formation of a coalition government. He also played a significant role in the 2010 constitution reform process. Despite running unsuccessfully for president five times, Odinga remained a prominent opposition leader and a symbol of resilience and hope for many Kenyans.

In accordance with his wishes, a public funeral service is scheduled to be held at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi on Friday, October 17, 2025, followed by a private burial in Siaya County on Saturday. The funeral arrangements are being overseen by a national committee co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, Raila’s elder brother.
As the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its most influential leaders, tributes continue to pour in from across the globe, honouring Odinga’s legacy and his unwavering commitment to justice and democracy.
May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace
