When Debra walks into a room, it’s not just her warm smile that turns heads—it’s the subtle, captivating scent that follows her. But what many don’t know is that behind that fragrance is a story of purpose, hustle, and a dream in the making.
A student at KSTVET, Debra is not only pursuing her academic goals but also running a growing perfume business on campus. Her journey began with a simple desire: to find purpose and earn an income while studying.
“I was inspired by people I look up to—those doing well in business,” she shares. “I realized there’s potential in business just as much as in academics. Being a jack of all trades is better than being a jack of one.”
Balancing Books and Hustle
Running a business while studying isn’t easy, but Debra has found her rhythm. She schedules her perfume sales in the evenings, carving out two focused hours each day to meet her sales targets.
“It’s all about balance,” she says. “I follow the school schedule, then use my free time wisely. I’m proud that I can hit my goals in just two hours.”
Why Perfume?
For Debra, perfume isn’t just a product—it’s a passion.
“I’m a lover of scent,” she beams. “If you do something you love, you’ll never stop. I know I can grow in this because I genuinely enjoy recommending scents and seeing people feel good.”
Marketing Her Brand
Debra treats her hustle like a real business. She promotes her products through weekly adverts in the KSTVET student WhatsApp group and relies heavily on referrals.
“I call it a company,” she laughs. “Because I believe in it. People come because a friend told them about it—and I always deliver.”
Challenges on the Scented Road
Like any entrepreneur, Debra has faced hurdles. Her biggest challenge? Being a mobile seller with limited stock.
“I can only carry a few bottles at a time, which means I can’t always meet every client’s preference. But I dream of having a physical shop one day.”
Lessons for Fellow Students
Debra’s advice to other students is simple but powerful:
“Start with what you have. Even less than 5,000 shillings can get you going. Let your situation motivate you. A side hustle can put something extra in your pocket.”
Dreaming Bigger
Debra doesn’t plan to stop at campus sales. She envisions becoming a major perfume dealer, importing unique scents and setting up a perfume hub in a town with untapped demand.
“Business has become a hobby. I love convincing someone to try my product and then delivering on that promise. And yes—I love money too!” she adds with a grin.
Final Words
To students juggling studies and side hustles, Debra leaves this message:
“Do something you love—something that makes you wake up and interact with people. Have a dream, start, act, and keep going. Discipline and consistency are everything.”
